Step1

Preheat Grill or Skillet

If you're using a grill, preheat it to medium-high heat. If you're using a stovetop skillet or pan, heat it over medium-high heat.

Step 2

Prepare the Burger Patties:

  • Take the ground beef and gently form it into 4 equal-sized patties. Be careful not to overwork the meat, as this can make the burgers tough.
  • Season both sides of each patty with salt and pepper.

Step 3

Grill or Pan-Fry the Patties:

  • Place the burger patties on the preheated grill or skillet.
  • Grill or cook the patties for about 3-4 minutes on each side for medium-rare burgers. Adjust the cooking time to your desired level of doneness.
  • If you're adding cheese, place a slice on each patty during the last minute of cooking, allowing it to melt.

Step 4

Toast the Burger Buns:

  • While the patties are cooking, cut the burger buns in half and lightly butter the cut sides.
  • Place the buns on the grill or in a separate skillet, cut-side down, and toast them until they are golden brown. This should take about 1-2 minutes.

Step 5

Assemble the Burger:

  • Start with the bottom half of each toasted bun.
  • Place a lettuce leaf on the bun, followed by a burger patty (with or without cheese), sliced tomatoes, sliced onions, and pickles if desired.
  • Add your preferred condiments, such as ketchup and mustard.
  • Finish with the top half of the toasted bun.
